  • Starter Activity:
    • What do you think are important things to pay attention to when you are presenting something? (Qualities of a good speaker/things to avoid/ etc)

    • Teams:
      • Team 1- Physical Presence

    • In your team, you will review the section you are responsible for.
    • On the paper in the middle of your table, create a poster that highlights the important information for each of the rubric categories.

  • Announcement: POL class competition will be MONDAY, 11/5/12
  • Starter Activity: Free write (by Free-write I mean that you are writing, continuously, until I ask you to stop. If you run out of things to say on your first topic, keep writing on something else!
  • Tone map activity- mapping the tone of YOUR poem
    • In your RWWS folder in Google Docs, create a new folder called "Poetry"
    • In your "poetry" folder create a document and title it "POL tone map"
    • In this document, you will need to go to table --> insert table and create a table that is 2 columns wide (the number of rows will depend on how many lines your poem has)
    • In the LEFT column you will place the lines of your poem, in the RIGHT column you will tell me what TONE you are trying to convey
    • If there is more than one tone/line, make a / mark in the line of the poem where the tone would shift and in the right column put the first tone/ second tone
    • * Sample tone map can be found in the RWWS shared documents folder- document is titled "Jenny Kissed Me Sample Tone Map**

  • Instructions for YOUNG AUTHOR'S PEER CONFERENCES- DUE ON MONDAY (ALL)
    • Log into your gmail
    • Locate the folder "RWWS Documents" in your "shared with me" folder
    • DRAG this folder into your turn-in folder for RWWS (the one named "First name Last name")
    • In this folder, locate the PDF file titled "Peer Conference" (note: NOT "Peer Conference Sheet") AND "Young Author's Peer Conferences" (spreadsheet file)
    • In the "Young Author's Peer Conferences," you will find out who you will share your Young Author's piece with AND their email address.
    • SHARE your piece with your partner
    • LOCATE your partner's piece in your "shared with me" folder"
    • COMPLETE the questions on the "Peer Conference" document in the COMMENTS on your partner's piece
    • HIGHLIGHT and comment on anything additional that you see

Mountain Field Trip

For those students not attending the Mountain trip (to replace the writing prompts grades the field trip participants will complete)
  • In your RWWS folder in Google docs, create a folder named "Transcendentalism"
  • Using the following links, research transcendentalism
  • In your "Transcendentalism" folder, create a document titled "Transcendentalism notes" and take notes (making sure to cite your sources with Works Cited Entries AND In-text citations)
  • Write a 1 page, double-spaced report on what you learn about Transcendentalism (uploaded to same folder titled "Transcendentalism Paper"- MLA FORMAT!)
  • Find and read the lyrics to one of the following songs
    • Colors of the Wind- Vanessa Williams
    • Imagine- John Lennon
    • Mother Earth- Within Temptation
    • Earth Song- Michael Jackson
    • Hands- Jewel

Turn in (All) Independent Reading Projects
  • Starter Activity
    • Log into your gmail on FIREFOX or CHROME
    • Go to your Google Drive and create a folder called "Independent Reading Projects"
    • Submit your IR Form (Title it "IR Form 1)
    • If your project is digital (diary entries, alternate ending, etc), submit the document here (Title it "IR project 1- title of book)
  • Literacy Circles: Transcendentalism Readings
    • To prepare for our field trip, we will be completing literacy circles on transcendentalism by Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau.
    • Decide on your literacy circle roles
    • Read through the following document INDEPENDENTLY, taking individual notes and completing your ROLE.
    • When instructed, discuss the pieces in your Literacy Circles.
  • Homework:
    • Trip participants- pack smartly and sleep!!!
    • Students not on the field trip: check the WD and RWWS wikispaces while we are away for your alternate assignments.
